Being released tomorrow:

OpenQuest Basics- Revised with Full Colour art!

A Message from Furthermost – A River of Heaven Scenario by John Ossoway.

The Clockwork Palace – Any OpenQuest Adventure Location, with new cult, magic, creatures, personalities and scenario seeds, by Paul Mitchener.

Watch this space for more details.

The Clockwork Palace by Paul Mitchener
At the edge of the city stands the Clockwork Palace, a huge building made not of stone but of brass. Over a mile long, it is an intricate mechanism of clocks, levers, hydraulics, and only the clockwork god knows what else.
The uses of some parts of the mechanism are obvious. Clocks are everywhere within the palace, mechanical men guard the automatic doors, and an orrery (a mechanical model of the planetary system) dominates the main entrance lobby.

But even those who live there, the Clockmakers, know few of the Palace’s ancient secrets. Nor do they know its original function. Was it a temple to a mechanical god? Was it itself a god? Did the Clockmakers once build the Palace, or did they move there, before even their accurate records began?

This short supplement for OpenQuest details the Clockwork Palace, its mechanical magic, the Clockmakers, and half a dozen adventure outlines linked to the palace.
You can use it in any OpenQuest fantasy game where such a part mechanical, part magical wonder fits in.

A Message from Furthermost by John Ossoway
Praise Kane the First of Us, Praise the Guilds.

Your team has been assembled by Father Francisco of Special Circumstances.
The Guild Council has ordered a live team to investigate the loss of contact with the Guildship Tannhäuser. No one has dared attack a Guild Stepship in centuries. Special Circumstances are taking no chances.
You go in, you establish what has happened, you recover the crew and as much data as possible. You’ll be operating on your own and there will be no reinforcements.
Business as usual.

A Message from Furthermost is an adventure for River of Heaven Science Fiction Roleplaying Game. It is self-contained, and comes with six pregenerated characters if you want to pick it up and play. It can also easily dropped into an existing campaign.

RuneQuest 6 now Mythras

Lawrence Whitaker, one half of the Design Mechanism, announced the new name for RQ6 this weekend.

Mythras is the new name for RuneQuest 6th Edition, the acclaimed roleplaying system developed by The Design Mechanism.

From July 2016, the name Mythras takes over from the previous trademark, but the same great rules continue, bringing you d100-based roleplaying adventure centred on logical, consistent, straightforward mechanics, coupled with innovative approaches to character creation, combat, magic and monsters. The name may have changed, but the song remains the same.

Why did we choose Mythras as a name?First of all, the game has always been about adventuring in mythic landscapes, with characters shaping their own stories, creating their legends and forging their own myths. It comes from the authors’ deep love of real world myths and ancient stories and so is the natural starting point for a new name.

Next comes Mithra or Mithras, a deity found in Persian, Greek, Roman, and Celtic mythologies. Mithras is a god of warriors, a divine protector of oaths and covenants, a protector of cattle and of waters. In the Zoroastrian Avestas, he is described as Mithra of Wide Pastures, of the Thousand Ears, and of the Myriad Eyes.

Bringing these two sources together gives us Mythras, a game concerned with myths, protectors, oaths, great deeds and wonderful stories: the perfect name for our game system.

Also Lawrence announced the release data and preview of Classic Fantasy, which is basically a D100 version of early D&D using the Mythras system.

This is a special sneak peak at the highly anticipated RuneQuest 6 and Mythras supplement, Classic Fantasy. With this book (to be released in April or May), fans of d100 roleplaying systems have all the tools they need to undertake Old School dungeon and wilderness crawls, with all the classes, spells, magic items and monsters found in one of the most venerable and fondly remembered game systems in the hobby.

This 18 page preview gives a sample of the new rules, spells and monsters Classic Fantasy contains. It also introduces Mythras – the new name for RuneQuest 6th Edition, and we hope you enjoy this sample of what is to come!

OpenQuest Companion

A very tentative starting contents list for this work in progress collection of rules and gamey bits 😉

OpenQuest Kung Fu – how to use OQ Battle Magic to model chinese kung fu specifically and martial arts in general.

One Magic System – A conversion of the existing three magic system, into a simplified streamlined system which does not use magic points or have variable spells.

Quick Quest – how I run OpenQuest on the hoof at my gaming table.

Goons – the simplifed system for non-player characters, probably cleaned up and expanded from the article I posted here.

Right that’s my lunch break over, back to Crypts & Things 😉

Lone Wolf Gamebooks to be published by Cubicle 7

A big part of my gaming yoof in the 80s, Joe Denver’s Lone Wolf gamebooks are to be published by the fine folk over at Cubicle 7, who recently released the inspiring Lone Wolf Roleplaying game via Kickstarter (which I must review soonish, but fully recommend).

Here’s the announcement:

We are delighted to announce that we have secured the rights to publish Joe Dever’s world-famous Lone Wolf gamebooks!

The agreement covers all English language editions of the best-selling solo adventure gamebook series, including brand new titles and out-of-print volumes. The initial release will be the highly-anticipated Lone Wolf 29: The Storms of Chai – the first wholly new Lone Wolf gamebook in over 17 years.

Fans of the ‘Collector Series’ hardbacks will now have the chance to complete their collections. Cubicle 7 will continue to release the books in this established format, re-publish the out of print volumes and fully complete the series.

“I’m very happy to be bringing my Lone Wolf gamebooks to Cubicle 7,” said author, Joe Dever. “The C7 team are very talented and a delight to work with. They’ve done a fantastic job with the Lone Wolf Adventure Game. This deal is wonderful news for all my loyal fans. It makes perfect sense to have all things Lone Wolf gathered together under one roof, and Cubicle 7 has proved beyond doubt its uncompromising commitment to quality.”

“Lone Wolf gamebooks introduced a huge number of people to fantasy gaming – myself included,” said Cubicle 7 CEO, Dominic McDowall. “It’s truly an honour to be involved with the Lone Wolf legend and we at Cubicle 7 are proud to be able to introduce Joe’s awe-inspiring creation to a whole new generation.”

The Smart Party do OSR

I strongly recommend UK Podcast “What would the Smart Party do about..“. EvilGaz and Baz King are diehard gamers who intelligently discuss the topic at hand…and this episode is a good one all about the OSR with guest Dan Sell of the Undercroft fanzine.

What the heck is OSR anyway? Damned if I know, so we got the lovely Dan (from The Undercroft fanzine fame) to come and school us like it’s 1987. So come find out what those letters stand for, what the gaming movement is about, does everyone on RPG.net really hate it and much, much more!

So gowan give it a punt 😉

Neath the Shadow zine

This was a pleasant surprise present for me the other day. Kristian Richards who is the author/artist/layout guy of the rather splendid Age of Shadow RPG, which is based of the OpenQuest SRD, sent me a copy of his rather smart A5 Fanzine ‘Neath the Shadow’ for Age of Shadow. Its a nice light read, with a couple of detailed encounters, a magic item and some quick rules for Age of Shadow. Its black and white through out with art mainly being the rather speliendid maps that Kristian produces (check out his Little Book of Dungeons book).  I’ve got one of the hand made copies, with its nice pale blue card cover lovingly hand made by Kristian himself, the POD version available via lulu has a lovely colour cover.

I’m a big fan of Age of Shadow. Kristian took the OQ SRD and built a nice little RPG for some Silmarillion style fantasy action, so I’m pleased to see that its getting even a little bit of additional support 🙂

More adventures for the C&T Remastered Kickstarter

A late one this, I’ve just added two more add-on adventures to the C&T Remastered Kickstarter, bringing the number of available adventures up to Five! I’ve also added a New Backer level of Sorcerer (£35) which gives you pdf+ at cost POD print copies of all five adventures + a hardcover rulebook.

Briefly the new adventures are the sequels to UK S01 Blood of the Dragon and are part of the Spire’s Trilogy.

UK S02 The Dark Path
This module takes the characters into the Stinking Marsh, a twisted weird land where nature has been befouled by powerful magic in ancient times. As well as a quick guide to the lands of the Stinking Marsh and its inhabitants, the module has two adventures. The Dark Path itself and Terror At Black Rock.

UK S02 Fort Boneguard

Moving northwards from the Stinking Marsh the adventurers arrive in the bleak and devastated Bonefields, the site of an ancient holocaust where an entire civilisation was destroyed by magical warfare. Unbelievably there is a small outpost , the Fort Boneguard of the title, hanging on despite constant attacks from the Bonefield’s undead inhabitants. This is a sandbox adventure, which suggests lots of plots and events but leaves the direction of play completely up to the players.

Both are 75%-90% written and I’m aiming to land them in the 30 – 40 page count.
