Just in time for Halloween…..
By Paul Mitchener
“The ruins of the Unknown City stand at the edge of the Death Wind Steppe, surrounded by the foothills of the Wolf Head Mountains. They are a monument to a once mighty city. Few now know the city‘s history, and how it fell. The city‘s old name, Tetronis, now belongs to a village of simple fisherfolk standing amongst the ruins.
The force behind both the old city‘s greatness and its destruction was the god Orlusz.”
A swords and Sorcery romp for four to six characters of level 6 to 8. It takes place in the frozen north of the Continent of Terror, and sees the characters pitted against ravaging barbarians, who seek an ancient weapon for their mistress. Further exploration leads them to the forsaken temple of an evil sect of Necromancers.
Although written for Crypts and Things it is compatible with other Old School Class/Level based games.
25 pages long available now in print and pdf via DriveThruRpg.com
Been busy producing stuff recently and along side OpenQuest 2 I’ve been putting Paul Mitchener’s Tomb of the Necromancer together. 25 pages of perfectly formed mid level terror set in the frozen North of Zarth, featuring Beserkers, the quest for a long lost magical item and more gruesome undead than you can shake a +1 sword at. Well this is Crypts & Things for you 😉
More details to follow. Print proof just sent off so should be available via Drive Thru in the next couple of weeks in both print + pdf formats.
In the mean time here’s the cover by the amazingly talented David Michael Wright.
Just messing about seeing how quickly I can create monsters for my OQ2 adventures. D100 stat blocks are notorious for being difficult to put together, but this little critter only took me 5 or 10 minutes.
Crombar the Mauler
(Troll Beserker)
Quote of the day: “Crombar smash you!!”
The slave of some dark lord, who bought this runt of the litter from a slaver. In Crombar’s eyes this was an kindness more infinite than that shown by his kin, to be repaid by channeling his dark rage against the dark lord’s enemies.

Just flicking through the Archives I noticed the first post was three years ago.
Back then it was just me wittering on about OpenQuest, old Fighting Fantasy books, my first OSR D&D games with Labyrinth Lord. Crypts and Things was not even a gleam in my eye, but would grow out of this blog later on, and if you said I’d be doing a second edition of OpenQuest I would have told you to feck off! How quickly its all flown by 🙂
Here’s the Sorcerer himself from back in 2010 looking a lot less healthy than he currently does, courtesy of John Ossoway (art originally from The Savage North supplement for OpenQuest).
Latest progress report is that the pdf has been sent to the backers (if you’ve not received yours email me at newt@d101games.com). Soon off to printers with the expectation it will out to backers end of this month with it going on general release in early October.
Here’s Jon Hodgson’s awesome cover 🙂
Those excellent chaps Cakebread and Walton, purveyors of the fine Renaissance RPG (based on OpenQuest) and Clockwork and Chivalry, have a Kickstarter project guaranteed to engage the young at heart swashbuckler!
In a deserted temple on the Plateau of Pain stands a seven foot high statue of a long forgotten god. This robbed figure wielding a short sword held aloft is covered in writhing multicoloured snakes, ranging from between two to three feet in length. Baby snakes emerge periodically magically from the statues wide open mouth. The snakes are carried far and wide by an order of assasins who specialise in dissappearances. They know a magic word which paralases the snakes into a hard dart like form. They will then throw the snake at a target who on a successful hit must Save vs Poison as the snake’s fangs sink into exposed flesh. If the target fails they start to phase out of reality within twenty four hours (D20+3). Within that time the target becomes more and more insubstantial. Only strong magic can save them, such as Dispel Magic as cast by a ninth level Magician, or higher, or paradoxically the petrifying gaze of a Basilisk. If the target phases out of reality, their insubstantial form is transported to an isolated place in the Shroud, known as the Purple Room, where it waits for up to sixteen hours (2d8 hours) before being returned to Reality for its final damnation. For after they leave the Purple Room they are transported insied the Statue, where they become their essense produces the next batch of Snakes!
Finnnnnnally, the IndieGoGo campaign for the RQ 6 Hardcover is up and going, and about 50% funded at time of writing after about a day and a half with thirty days to go.
I’ve funded this modest campaign, which I reckon will have modest stretch goals, but if you want a hardcover version of the most excellent RQ6, which won’t be available via retail, go check it out.
